Apple Collar Rot: Symptoms, Causes, Prevention, and Effective Management Strategies

While you are walking through your apple orchard, one apple tree appears to be losing strength as its leaves turn straw colored and fruit starts to color earlier than the usual time of year. The initial diagnosis could be nutrient deficiency, drought stress or root injury. However, in a very poor tree the removal of the bark and the application of frequent care will seldom help; in such a tree examination of the trunk at the level of planting is indicated. A possible serious problem is apple collar rot in orchards which are frequently wet or wet for prolonged periods.

I would not make a diagnosis based on the symptoms in the leaves when I was a gardener. I would examine the bottom of the trunk, check for water collecting around the tree after rain and would compare the damaged tree with healthy trees growing nearby. If you can see early signs of these apple tree root problems, you may be able to determine the exact cause of these issues and then take action to resolve them before they cause a big issue.

If you're a gardener struggling with the issue, here is what you need to know!

Near the soil line or at the graft union, often as the result of a disease, Apple collar rot caused by phytophthora treatment, affecting the lower part of the trunk. Pathogens infect and kill bark, collar and affect the flow of water and nutrients in trees. There will be a greater risk in low level areas and wet ground. If it appears that within the garden the disease (apple collar rot) is negatively impacting the fruit, do a complete examination of the garden for the presence of the disease; improve garden drainage; remove all water at the base of the tree; seek professional advice from a garden specialist on local area (registered disease management strategies). If it is very girdled, it is difficult if not impossible to save the tree. Continue reading to know about biological Collar rot treatment.

How to find out why the apple collar rot disease in an orchard?

Understanding Phytophthora cactorum

Knowledge of disease-causing organisms in apple collar rot helps in educational efforts. Apple collar rot caused by phytophthora cactorum commonly referred to as water mould / an 'oomycote'. It has a similar appearance to fungus but isn't a fungus; be aware of this when selecting a disease management product.

The pathogen may have some ability to travel through soil; moisture helps infection stages of the pathogen get into susceptible plant tissues. Infection can take place around the roots, crown or collar depending upon the pathogen and conditions. Depending on the fungus of Phytophthora, root and crown rot may follow but little could be blamed if it does, until proven so.

Why are there bad drainage and wet conditions as risk factors for apple collar rot disease?

Try to think of those places in your orchard where rain water or irrigation water is collected in puddles. A root zone may get saturated in a low area, be compacted, or may be made up of heavy clay, or be watered too deeply or drained poorly on the surface. The conditions are favorable for Phytophthora activity and a great infection risk.

If I kept sighting water around an apple tree root problems, it would not merely be me seeing a drop in the bucket but rather it should be a warning sign. Although it may appear that the tree has collar rot, drainage issues are not a symptom of collar rot – it's a red flag to visit the base of the trunk and observe tree condition.

Why do gardeners need to be wary of Apple Collar Rot Problems?

Early Above-Ground Symptoms

Early collar rot of apple symptoms can be found in canopy and not at the trunks. Observe abnormal pallor or yellowing of leaves, delayed bud break, leaf reduction, twig dieback, early fruit color and drop. The tree might appear weak despite thorough and adequate watering and fertilising.

These symptoms can also be due to drought, root injury, nutrient deficiencies or other diseases. So, I would use them as an opportunity to see if the tree was showing signs of collar rot, not as evidence of collar rot. The important thing is to relate the canopy signs to those near the soil line.

The Most Important collar rot of apple symptom: Greyish-brown bark close to the ground

Possible reddish discoloration of bark beneath the bark. As the lesion grows it may cover a portion or the entire trunk.

The disease can be particularly harmful during these times. If the damaged area wraps around the trunk of the tree, preventing water and plant nutrients from moving the tree becomes very predictable. Currently, I would take photographs of the affected area if I thought the apple collar rot disease was present and ask for experts advice before taking off large chunks of bark. Too much scraping can make the wound worse, and may not get rid of the infection.

What causes apples rotting on the tree?

If this is the case and you are looking for answers on either rotting fruit on a tree or rotten apples on tree it is important to differentiate fruit problems from collar rot. Collar rot does not attack the upper part of the trunk, or the rest of the fruit; rather it is a disease attacking the lower trunk and root system.

Small fruits or fruit that turn colour early in the season may result from a very stressed tree. Fruit with soft, brown, sunken or mouldy patches, however, may suffer from other fruit disease or damage. I would go out and examine the fruit and not make an assumption based on the thought of collar rot as many times an apple will rot for some other reason.

When to know if a collar is rotated, and how to do so without wasting any money on treatment!

As we have already discussed collar rot of apple symptoms, I would do a simple orchard inspection prior to purchasing a fungicide or biological product. Compare infected trees to healthy trees, to determine if there are a grouping of trees in a wet area, and examine bark at the tree collar and graft union. Check for recurrent rain, irrigation activity, plant depth and any previous reported water logging.

If it is not possible to diagnose, speak to a local horticulture specialist or plant diagnostic laboratory. Laboratory diagnosis may be necessary to diagnose the disease of Phytophthora and to rule out other root diseases, trunk disease and environmental disorders. An inadequate and wasteful investment of funds can be saved by at least checking whether the patient has the problem or not, and then providing the necessary treatment when it is indeed an apple tree root problem.

Some gardeners are interested in using apple collar rot treatment – but what is it and how can it be applied?

The first step is to address water logging around the trunk. The first is to rectify water logging around the trunk.
First of all, reduce the imbibition moisture in the collar. Ensure irrigation water is not continually kept in the holds of the trunk, ensure surface water is either kept in a separate water catchment or is being biological control of collar rot disease and drained, if possible. In new plantings of the selected area a raised planting position method can be beneficial depending on soil and orchard site conditions.

Keep in mind, improved drainage will decrease disease conducive factors, but it won't kill the initial pathogen already in the soil. Water management is critical to the response to apple collar rot, and not a containment or cure.

If it looks to be localized, contact a professional advisor as quickly as possible to decide if the tree can be treated. Heavy/uncontrolled girdling, heavy canopy dieback or extensive damage around the trunk may limit the ability to save the tree.

I would not trust one remedy or product promise to solve my problem. Trees shall be removed if it is recommended, in compliance with local regulations for disposal, and healthy portions of the orchard should not be disturbed with the potentially infested soil. The apple collar rot disease caused by the phytophthora treatment is dependent on the severity of the disease, diagnosis and also on approved routability of the disease in the given area.

Rotate fungicides within their class (and/or between classes) to avoid resistance. Ensure that fungicides are used only when necessary and registered.

There is no guarantee that all fungicides will be effective against Phytophthora, as oomycetes are not true fungi. Some active ingredients may be used as part of locally approved management programmes but their sustainable use depends on the crop, pathogen, stage of disease, country and the product label.

Please be aware that before use any product must be registered for apples and the specific disease and the application method. generally much more valuable as preventive or early management actions than as means to restore trees in which the trunks have been severely damaged. No treatment should be offered as a cure, there are no guarantees.

Is it possible to use Trichoderma harzianum to control Apple collar rot Disease?

The mode of action of Trichoderma harzianum in the root zone

The fungus is found in some biological control agents and is a beneficial fungus (Trichoderma harzianum). It may also Traffic with the plants defence system and colonise the root zone and exclude some soil borne pathogens from growth spaces depending upon the strain and formulation. This makes it more difficult to getting growers to consider using as a part of a soilborne disease option.

But not all the Trichoderma strains were equally effective and a fungicide that is effective against a particular pathogen may not control Phytophthora cactorum as we already know that Apple collar rot caused by phytophthora. Strain to strain, formulation to formulation, environmental and cultural conditions, time and rate of application all have an influence on the performance. There is a need for pathogen-specific evidence for collar rot disease for biological control.

Understanding Apple Collar Rot Disease through Research

In 2014, Sharma et al., (Indian Phytopathology) tested various formulations of biological agents, bio-resources and fungicides against Apple collar rot caused by phytophthora treatment. The mixture of T. harzianum strain TH1, Enterobacter aerogenes and metalaxyl-MZ was highly effective in the pot and nursery tests reported here. Integrated treatments also performed better in terms of shoot growth than untreated plants under orchard conditions.

The key takeaway from the study for growers is that it was on a combination of inputs, rather than T. harzianum per se. The findings of one strain and treatment programme are not necessarily applicable to all biological products and treatment programmes. There is some evidence to support the use of integrated management, yet local recommendations and evidence of products are still relevant.

HarzShield Soilborne Disease Management is used on soil-borne diseases attacking plants and crops

Seeing Jack Fusena first, I felt compelled to hear the truth. The first time I spotted Jack Fusena, I had to hear the facts. HarzShield for Collar rot treatment is a biological product of Novobac that contains Trichoderma harzianum. It is a biological product used in the management of soilborne diseases and is used in the root zone as described on its product page. Those gardeners who wish to pursue biological measures may wish to read the product information and also link to the Trichoderma harzianum page, which provides information on the active ingredient.

HarzShield for Apple Collar Rot’s Symptoms and Management

What are some things gardeners should check prior to applying HarzShield?

If you suspect collar-rot on an apple tree, before using HarzShield for apple collar rot treatment, determine if its current label permits it to be applied in the area where you are growing apples for treatment of P. cactorum. Some target diseases are included on the product label, but the list of target diseases should not be interpreted as an indication of efficacy against apple collar rot.

Would recommend using Harzshield as a treatment/disease investigation to consider, rather than a confirmed treatment for this disease at this time unless label and supporting data substantiates such use. Balanced with good drainage, location of appropriate rootstocks and careful monitoring of the orchards, a biological product should not be a substitute for them.

How to Control Collar Rot in New and Established Orchards of Apple?

Prevention is effected prior to planting. Select a well-drained site, and buy good, disease-free trees from quality nurseries and select rootstock, compatible with local soil and disease conditions. There is variation in rootstock susceptibility and no rootstock can be said to be resistant in all situations.

If a tree (or trees) is in decline, note the site of such a tree, any symptoms or signs that appear and predict the orchard pattern. Losses from the disease should be small if steps are carried out to limit damage to the trunk to a minimum once the disease has been diagnosed.

A Gardener’s Seasonal Action Plan for Apple Collar Rot Disease

Following a rain be sure to look for water pooled around apple trees. As part of the routine orchard inspection, check any weak trees, and for any trees showing signs of yellowing, poor growth and/or premature fruit colouring, inspect the base of the trunk. If symptom(s) are noticed, document and define a time for accurate diagnosis prior to the selection of a treatment method.

Conclusion: Protect the Collar Before the Tree Declines

Apple collar rot disease can lead to dieback and symptoms don't show up in the canopy until the tree becomes weakened. As a gardener, your starting point is to first think about checking the trunk lower, watering levels and verify diagnosis of the cause. Where Phytophthora is suspected use site and irrigation changes in combination with appropriate locally recommended, registered procedures if necessary.

Biological products containing Trichoderma harzianium, such as HarzShield, may merit consideration for treating apple collar rot as part of an integrated disease management program, but efficacy for the disease in apples should be confirmed. Early attention, a sound diagnosis and reasonable expectations are the best approach to apple collar rot—do not entertain confidence that one product is going to save every tree.

I dealt with root rot on one of my orchids and it escalated fast, just like described. I tried disinfecting tools and doing a quick rinse treatment, but I learned Physan is more for sanitation than a full cure. Midway I checked https://purelyponds.com/product/physan-20-1-gallon/ and adjusted my dilution. Cutting damaged roots and improving airflow helped way more.

Good details. As far as pest management and control is concerned there are quite a few pesticides which effects only the pests and does not harm the ecosystem. Safer for humans and plants.

Insects and plants are like made for each other. Plants and flowers do attract insects. But if you are worried about caterpillars which eat up the plants and their leaves then it is best to go for a pesticide or contact a pest control company.

It is always best to do a professional pest control service. A complete pest control work for insects will be good. Termites and bedbugs requires pesticides which are specifically made for them. For all other insects a common pesticide will do. Many insects are ****erous and can cause serious health issues so better to get the pest control work done.

There might be hundreds of home made methods to prevent mosquitoes but all are not that effective. Mosquitoes are ****erous so better not to take risk. Fixing mosquito nets is the best and the only solution.
