Best Practices for Mango Fruit Fly Prevention and Control in Orchards


A long-term crisis has been experienced in the farming community in the mango-rich areas of West Africa and East Africa, like Ziguinchor in Senegal and the mango belts of Kenya. The offender is mango fruit fly scientific name termed as Bactrocera dorsalis. This pest has caused serious economic losses in the last ten years and in some regions, the losses of fruits have been between 40 to 80 percent. 

To a lot of smallholder farmers, this does not only mean spoiled fruit, but also truckloads of mangoes rejected by buyers and exporters. One organic farmer in Senegal told of being horrified to find that what seemed to be a good crop was actually full of soft, infested mangoes-- larvae eating their way in, the fruit useless. The anger of wasting a year of work to a pest that acts behind the scenes is felt throughout the communities that are affected.

The mango fruit fly is a very tough enemy to orchardists. The female adult deposits her eggs in the fruit as it ripens, and in a few days, the larvae emerge and start feeding on the fruit. This feeding not only ruins the fruit but increases the rate of decay so that it quickly becomes rotten. The Bactrocera dorsalis life cycle is so short that it is frightening; in the best circumstances, it can take a generation three weeks, causing the population to explode in the growing season.

Every female can lay hundreds of eggs, so population explosions are always a possibility. The effects are wide-ranging, with infested fruit being discarded by local markets and international buyers, and frequently leading to export bans and disastrous losses by farmers. Many asked me ‘are fruit flies and gnats the same’, they are not identical; the actual fruit flies such as Bactrocera dorsalis are far more devastating to fruit crops and pose a distinct problem to mango growers. In the blog below, I have discussed my methods of how to control fruit flies using mango fruit fly control methods. 

Recognizing and Understanding the Threat

The early detection of mango fruit fly damage symptoms is very important in the fruit fly control. Soft spots on the fruit, oozing sap at puncture points, early fruit drop, and, when the fruit is cut open, the unmistakable existence of larvae are the most frequent symptoms. The signs of fruit fly control in orchards are usually not noticed until the infestation is already in full swing and therefore regular monitoring is necessary.

The use of pheromone traps and visual inspections during fruit development are increasingly being used by farmers and extension officers to detect outbreaks before they become out of control. The economic consequences of these infestations cannot be overestimated. In Senegal, the losses associated with fruit flies have been revealed to decrease household income by as much as 17 percent. 

In Kenya, losses caused by fruit flies in mango production are estimated to be more than 1 billion dollars per annum. In addition to direct loss of yield, infested fruit is frequently rejected by the high standards of export markets, leading to high rejection rates and limited access to markets.

Cultural and Mechanical Practices for Prevention

The best way to get rid of fruit fly infestation is by strict field sanitation. One of the most effective methods of eliminating fruit fly infestation is regular collection and destruction of fallen or infested fruits as this breaks the lifecycle of the pest and minimizes the future populations. 

The pupae in the soil are also exposed to the sun by deep ploughing after harvest, which prevents the next generation. Canopy management through pruning and other methods increases air movement and exposure to sunlight which makes the orchard less attractive to egg laying females. Crop management practices also involve not planting alternate host plants such as guava, papaya, citrus, and melons around the organic fruit fly control in orchards since they may act as reservoirs of fruit flies. 

There is also an early harvesting to reduce the exposure period of the fruit. Egg-laying can be prevented through physical barriers, e.g. bagging developing fruits with fine mesh nets. Nonetheless, community action is often the most effective method of producing results, mass trapping and coordinated sanitation in adjacent farms can exert a wider scale control on the fruit fly population. To reinforce orchard defenses, fruit fly prevention sprays and exclusion methods are becoming more common in these practices.

Monitoring and Trapping: The First Line of Defense

The key to mango fruit fly control s monitoring and trapping is the initial defense mechanism. Methyl eugenol pheromone traps are very effective in attracting and killing male fruit flies. Growers place six to eight traps per acre at the fruit development stage to get the best results. 

Reduction of the number of flies is also done through homemade bait traps made of vinegar, overripe fruit or sugar solutions. Success depends on the placement of traps at canopy height and maintenance. 

It has been discovered that regular trap checks and early action can be the difference between a controllable pest infestation and a crop devastation by many farmer communities. Organic fruit fly spray is also becoming popular especially among individuals who are adhering to sustainable farming.

Biological and Organic Solutions

There is an increasing use of biological control of mango fruit fly. Neem oil is used at the rate of two to three milliliters per liter of water as a deterrent and it interferes with the lifecycle of the pest without affecting beneficial insects. 

Population of fruit flies can be reduced by encouraging natural predators like parasitic wasps, ladybirds and even poultry. One of the major advances in the biological control of mango fruit fly is the application of organic fruit fly spray such as BT Thuricide (fruit fly control insecticide) that has Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) or Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk).

When consumed by larvae, these bacteria cause a disruption in the digestive system and kill them but they are harmless to other organisms. The application protocols suggest extensive coverage when fruit fly activity is high, and to combine with other IPM practices to achieve optimal results. 

Farmers that have adopted BT Thuricide (best insecticide for fruit flies) in their integrated pest management practices have reported significant decreases in the fruit fly larvae as well as other caterpillar pests, and it is among the most effective fruit fly prevention spray against fruit flies in organic farming.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Combining Strategies for Sustainability

There has been an increased need of biological control of mango fruit fly for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in mango orchards. Studies and practical experience demonstrate that one method of mango fruit fly control can hardly ever be effective over a long period of time. A good IPM program will integrate cultural, mechanical, biological and in case of need, chemical methods of how to control fruit flies in a sustainable manner. 

An example of an IPM program may start pre-season with deep ploughing, orchard sanitation and trap placement. Regular monitoring, bagging of fruit at the right time, application of neem oil, and BT Thuricide (organic fruit fly spray), and maintenance of traps by the whole community are essential during the growing season. 

Hot water treatment of fruit and subsequent sanitation after harvesting can prevent carryover of the pest. Economic and ecological payoffs of IPM are significant: less pesticide, better fruit quality, easier access to export markets, and better environmental sustainability.

Conclusion: Lessons from the Field and the Way Forward

The war against the mango fruit fly control is still there but the experiences of the regions that have been affected are evident. The best practices are strict sanitation, early and regular surveillance, incorporation of biological products such as BT Thuricide and Bti, and above all, cooperation among the farmers. 

Sustainable control of mango fruit fly is not a single intervention but a process of learning, adaptation and community involvement. Farmers are advised to embrace IPM, keep in touch with the current research, and exchange their experiences with others in their communities. 

Integrating ancient knowledge and contemporary science, mango farmers will be able to save their crops and income, and secure a healthy future for their orchards and family. The answer to how to control fruit flies is not rocket science.​
