I have made some good progress collaborating with university labs and microbial specialists in designing an approach to managing these pest organisms that are so challenging to control by working with the university and microbial specialists and as well as introducing products such as Beveria WP, organic pesticide for mealybugs, which is composed of a fungus Beauvaria bassiana and allows us to shift the balance a bit to help fight these pests in a smarter way. Understanding the Citrus Mealybug: Life Cycle & Threats

The citrus mealybug (Planococcus citri) is a soft bodied, oval shaped insect that is readily identified by its waxy white covering. The life cycle of the citrus mealybug starts with the laying of hundreds of tiny eggs by the females in cottony sacs. The eggs emerge as yellowish nymphs called crawlers which actively seek good feeding sites on the plant. Citrus mealybug has multiple overlapping generations per year and so it is not unusual to find multiple life stages on a plant at any one time. This makes management difficult especially in hot and sheltered environments such as citrus orchards and high value blueberry plantations. University trials have repeatedly demonstrated that regular applications of Beveria WP, containing Beauveria bassiana, can reduce citrus mealybug populations by more than 75 percent, with no risk to beneficial insects or pollinators and in combination with broader integrated pest management.

Application Tips: How to Treat Mealybugs Effectively with Beveria WP

The best performance of controlling mealybugs with Beveria WP, organic pesticide for mealybugs, is achieved by mixing 1-1.2 grams of the product per liter of water, and spraying thoroughly all the surfaces- especially the undersides of leaves and crevices where mealybugs conceal themselves. When drenching the soil, the dose is 2-3 grams/liter. Spraying should be done early in the morning or in the evening to prevent heat stress on the fungus and should be repeated after every 7-10 days when the pest population is high. It is recommended that humidity be maintained at 60% or above to optimize fungal activity of Beauveria bassiana. Also, do not leave freshly prepared solutions in the sun or heat to maintain spore viability. This technique is compatible with successful citrus mealybug control by using Beauveria bassiana as an efficient and non-hazardous organic insecticide against mealybugs.
