My Corn Seeds Fail to open: The Wireworm Problem

During a single planting season, there was something that I noticed in my corn field. Germination was not even though good-quality seeds were used and the soil properly prepared. Considerable areas of the field were left bare, and the seedlings which sprouted out were feeble and stunted. I first thought the seed was bad or that there was some problem with the moisture and when I excavated the soil I found the actual cause of the problem- the wireworms. This particularly made me understand the importance of early awareness in  wireworm control in corn; particularly when the pest is acting underground and is never detected until it damages the crop.

Poor germination is not the only effect of wireworm damage in corn. They affect the growth of plants by feeding on the seeds and young roots and destroying them before they have a chance to grow. Severe cases can even require the replenishing of whole parts of the field making it more expensive and labor-intensive. It is here that the early introduction of wireworm organic control techniques can prove to be very effective. Without facing any complications, farmers prevent any harm to their crop because they are aware of the issue in the early stages.

The larvae of a click beetle is known as wireworms and is one of the most stubborn soil pests of corn. Corn wireworm scientific name that normally belongs to the genus of Agriotes even though there might be other allied species that may exist in various areas. These larvae are thin, hard and yellowish-brown in color, and therefore appear as small wires--they are called wireworms.

To deal with them, farmers need to know the wireworm life cycle, hence the longevity of their existence in the soil. Farmers have to be more proactive making it not only about the existing outbreaks but also the prevention of new ones.

Wireworm Damage in Corn – Early Recognition

Major losses in yields can be avoided through early identification of wireworm damage in corn. Poor germination is one of the initial signs whereby the seeds do not germinate because of feeding damages. Some seeds might be hollowed or have small holes of entry. Wireworm can feed on roots as it causes weak or stunted seedlings as plants start to grow.

Eventually, I also noticed healthier crops and enhanced soil conditions and this was a viable and sustainable approach.

Larvae can be exposed to predators and environmental stress caused by proper soil preparation and tillage thus lowering their population.

Maintaining balanced soil moisture and enhancing soil health using organic amendments should also be given attention as farms seek to find solutions on how to eliminate wireworms without using chemicals. The use of wireworm, in corn, should be controlled through regular monitoring and prompt response to control the wireworm damage in corn.
