Recently, the Royal HZPC Group called for a global “potato agriculture resilience revolution”. The initiative highlights the urgent need to address climate change and increase potato production. Against the backdrop of increasingly serious global climate change, a key question emerges: how can we increase potato production and reduce environmental impact by improving soil fertility? In this context,the importance of improving soil usage is crucial. To solve these problems, we performed an expert interview on applying organic soil amendments in relation to achieving these goals. Organic soil amendments for crops have a potential for improving soil fertility. This is helpful to increase potato production and enhance resilience in face of challenges of climate change.
Impact of Climate Change on Soil Health
Crop Nutrition Adviser: How does climate change influence soil health, particularly for potato production? How does a decrease in soil fertility affect the crop yield?
Climate Change Researcher: Climate change brought in a lot of negative effects on the soil. Extreme weather cases such as heavy rainfall, and long droughts is the common scenario nowadays. In addition, these torrential rains can lead to the loss of nutrients, causing deterioration in soil fertility. Since reduced soil fertility is directly impacting the potato production, potato yield per acre suffers. Such reduced soil fertility can cause different kinds of problems, such as adverse structural changes in the soil with a reduction in its water retention ability. Use of organic soil amendments is very helpful in addressing such a challenge. Declining soil fertility can lead to various problems such as adverse changes in soil structure leading to reduced water retention capacity. How to improve soil quality naturally becomes an important question for farmers facing these challenges.Applying organic soil amendments for crops can be a valuable solution to this challenge. I dealt with root rot on one of my orchids and it escalated fast, just like described.
