Organic Blueberry Pest Control

Target Pests: Aphids, Thrips, Mealybugs, Two-spotted spider mite

Recommended Product: Beaveria WP

Active ingredient: Beauveria bassiana

Two specific organic pesticides that can be used on blueberries to control various pests found on blueberry plants is bioinsecticide branded as BEVERIA WP and which can be used to manage different pests that include aphids, thrips, mealybug, and two-spot spider mites. It has the active constituent of fungus naturally existing, Beauveria bassiana which adheres fungal spores to the exoskeleton of the pest. As soon as these spores stick they germinate and infect the body of the insect where they multiply and toxins released by the pests eventually kill the pest.

Unlike other traditional chemical pesticides, BEVERIA WP has its mode of action as a contact agent, which implies that pests do not have to consume the product in order to experience its impact. This feature makes BEVERIA WP a perfect choice in the organic farming and sustainable blueberry industry that focuses on reduced pesticide deposits and the conservation of beneficial living organisms.

The product is deliverable as a foliar spray or soil drench, and therefore has an adequate reach to attack pests in every vegetable part. To obtain optimal control, products must be applied on a continuous basis, usually every 7810 days particularly during times of peak pest activity. This multipurpose use allows EVERIA WP to be used in conjunction with many other types of pesticides that may be chemical and biological in nature making it a great addition to an integrated pest management (IPM) program.

By its locally-specific organic blueberry pest control, and padding-specific safety record, BEVERIA WP assists blueberry farmers to lessen the presence of pests, to have healthier plants and produce better quality yields, and at the same time to promote biodiversity in their organic blueberry farm.

BT Thuricide is a well known organic insecticide that was specifically formulated to kill insect caterpillars, i.e., cranberry fruitworm (Acrobasis vaccinii). It consists of the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) only, or, Bt is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that produces proteins toxic to caterpillar larvae when they eat them.

The cranberry fruitworm larva ingests the plant treated with Bt and the Bt proteins bind to the receptors within their mid-guts and cause paralyzed behavior and death within a few days. Importantly, Bt is selective and it does not harm all insects or bees and other pollinators, including humans; hence its qualification as a best candidate to achieve the IPM and organic agriculture.

It comes in the form of a wettable powder that can be sprayed on the foliage of the cranberry plants. To achieve the best control control, use must be made against larvae before they grow large and dormant and preferably when they are young and actively feeding, advice that usually suggests control of early stages of infestation, whenever it is necessary to reapply the applications at intervals of 7 to 10 days or until the pest species is controlled.

This product can give cranberry growers the environmentally safe solution with the additional benefit beside protection, is that, it gives them the chance to grow healthier plants, and will grant them greater yields.

Common Blueberry Pests and Diseases Management

Blueberry diseases and pests can also be a major problem because they have the potential of drastically lowering yield and are an important consideration that should be addressed through an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to sustainability. Aphids, thrips, mealybugs, and two-spotted spider mites are some of the common blueberry pests that attack the leaves, stems, and fruits and cause damage, which includes leaf discoloration, stunted plants, and fruits. Fungal blueberry diseases and treatment such as mummy berry, anthracnose fruit rot, Phytophthora root rot, and leaf rust also give blueberries plants, and can weaken the plants, cause them to lose fruit and reduce productivity.

Cultural practices are vital in the control of such issues. Appropriate practices will lessen disease pressure, like timely pruning to enhance air circulation, controlled irrigation so as not to overload with moisture, removal of diseased plant parts, and planting resistant varieties of blueberries.

The use of biological controls in the management of blueberries constitutes environment-friendly blueberry management. Natural predators such as lady beetles and predacious wasps ensure that the number of pests are reduced. Also, pesticides developed using the advantageous fungi, Beauveria bassiana, as well as Metarhizium anisopliae, as bio-pesticides provide a safe route of infecting and killing pests to retain species useful and maintain a balance in the ecosystem.

Chemicals, such as targeted insecticide application and organic approved fungicides, such as copper formulations, should be used with caution while using monitoring data and applying economic threshold. The approach reduces resistance build-up and avoids destruction of useful organisms.

When used in conjunction with biological agents and selective chemical controls, the cultural techniques used to grow blueberries will help to ensure healthier plants, better quality of fruit and sustained crop productivity at reasonable costs, in a manner that is sustainable to nature.
